Abstract
This first paper of a series provides a history of eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus (EEEV) in New York State, USA, and the rationale for detailed studies at an inland endemic focus. Also included is summary information on the cultural growth, climate, and physiography of the area, and description of the freshwater swamp selected as a representative epicenter of local EEEV activity.
