Abstract

Reactions of trialkylboranes (R² ₃B) with 1-lithio-1,1-bis(phenylthio)alkanes [R¹(PhS)₂C^–Li⁺; R¹= H or Prⁿ], followed by reaction with mercury(II) chloride and oxidative work-up, give high yields of secondary (R¹= H) or tertiary (R¹= Prⁿ) alcohols (R¹R² ₂COH).
