Anticonvulsant Properties of Benadryl, Pyribenzamine

Abstract
Benadryl, Pyribenzamine and Dilantin were tested in rats for toxicity and for ability to modify maximal electro-shock seizure pattern and to prevent Metrazol convulsions. All 3 drugs modify maximal electroshock seizure pattern in non-toxic doses but do not prevent Metrazol convulsions. Toxic doses of all 3 drugs produce increased excitability and convulsions. The clinical significance of the data is discussed and a possible explanation is given for the salutary effect of Benadryl in petit mal.
