Abstract
Measurements of the Jahn-Teller splittings of the T2g5(D5)Eg5(D5) optical transition of divalent iron in the near infrared are reported for FeF2, KFeF3, KMgF3:Fe2+, FeSiF6:6H2O, FeCl2, and MgO:Fe2+. The effect of the site symmetry of the ferrous ion on the magnitude of the splittings observed is discussed.
