Abstract
The Lower Palaeozoic stratigraphy of the classical Björkvattnet-Virisen and adjacent areas of the central Västerbotten Caledonides is summerized and compared with similar successions further south in Jämtland and with the evidence from the Trondheim region. It is concluded that there are greater similarities between the Jämtland-Västerbotten successions and those of the eastern part of Trondheimfältet than between the latter and the classical stratigraphy of the Holonda-Horg area. This conclusion, supported by faunal characteristics, is best explained by postulating separate nappe units for the different successions of the Trondheim area.
