Abstract
Advantages of a complete diet (combined roughages and concentrate) in compressed form for feeding horses are pointed out and the attention given to such prepns. in other countries is cited. Some exploratory trials in the compression of mixtures of chopped hay and whole grain into cakes suitable for feeding horses are reported. Results indicate that the minimum temp. and pressure required for making satisfactory cakes vary widely with the kind of forage used. Satisfactory cakes having a specific gravity of 1.00 were made from a mixture of alfalfa hay and grain at 120[degree]C with a pressure of 500 lbs./sq. inch. Satisfactory cakes having a specific gravity of 0.69 to 0.82 were made from a timothy mixture in which timothy hay was substituted for alfalfa at 53[degree]C with a pressure of 3000 lbs./sq. inch.
