The Pacemaker Clinic

Abstract
An outline of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Pacemaker Clinic is presented. 133 patients with pacemakers have joined the clinic since it was established in 1963 and in June 1971, 99 patients were attending. All pacemaker systems are tested by analysing the stimulus artefact produced by that generator and the testing is extended for QRS triggered pacemakers to verify ventricular capture and to measure the maximum synchronous rate of the generator. The clinic has been successful in detecting impending battery failure thus avoiding unnecessary early elective generator replacement. The success of the clinic has also led to high patient morale and confidence in pacemakers.
