Effect of Lyophilization and Chloroform Extraction on Electrophoretic Migration of Serum Lipoproteins.

Abstract
Paper electrophoresis of lyophilized sera showed that lyophilization markedly retards the migration of some of the cholesterol in the lipoproteins associated with the beta-globulin area although it exerts little effect on the migration of cholesterol associated with the albumin, alpha1-globulin area. The cholesterol extracted by cold chloroform from lyophilized sera came principally from the beta-globulin area or from the area around the starting point. It is suggested that the cholesterol thus extracted represents primarily cholesterol which is associated with lipo- and chylomicrons.
