The Anti-Biotin Effect of Desthiobiotin

Abstract

The replacement value of desthiobiotin for biotin is summarized for 45 biotin-requir-ing organisms. Desthiobiotin in high conc. in the presence of exogenous biotin, was not anti-biotic for 5 of them. Failure of Lactobacillus casei to grow was not a simple effect of high desthiobiotin conc. since the organism grew excellently in the presence of 2500 y of biotin. Larger concs. of biotin effectively neutralize the anti-biotic effect of desthiobiotin.
