Abstract
The conditions under which amorphous polystyrene and polymethylmethacrylate deform inhomogeneously by the formation of fine shear bands have been investigated. The thermal history of the sample and the temperature and strain rate at which the deformation is carried out have been found to be critical. Stress-strain data have been obtained in order to test the criterion for inhomogeneous deformation presented in the preceeding paper. In addition, stress-birefringence measurements have been made on polystyrene and the possible influence of molecular transition processes on the plastic deformation process is discussed.
