Abstract
The alkali metals Rb and Cs and their suboxides Cs11O3, Cs7O (≙ [Cs11O3]Cs10) and [Cs11O3]Rb7 have been investigated by UPS (HeI). Extremely narrow O2p levels are observed, as well as significant differences in the binding energies of the 5p levels of chemically different Cs-atoms. From energy loss structures (surface plasmons) electron concentrations are determined. The results are discussed in terms of structurally derived bonding models. The alkali metal suboxides are of importance in IR-sensitive Ag/Cs/O-photocathodes.
