Apparent Free Amino Acids in Deproteinized Plasma of Normal and Uremic Persons1

Abstract
The levels of 14 individual amino acids were determined with standard microbiological procedures in the blood plasma of 6 fasted normal men and in the plasma of 6 severely uremic patients with chronic glomerular nephritis. The plasma concentration of several amino acids was abnormally low in the uremic patients. This was not necessarily due to the uremic syndrome, but might have been related to the low protein regime. The plasma concentrations of free arginine, glycine and proline were markedly increased in uremic patients.
