Hazards and Complications of Retrograde Aortography and Arteriography

Abstract

Eleven cases of complications following retrograde angiography are reported. These include 3 cases of dissection and thrombosis of the axillary artery, 4 cases of thrombosis of the brachial artery, 2 cases of pseudoaneurysm of the femoral artery, 1 case of thrombosis of the femoral artery, and 1 case of subintimal dissection and perforation of the aorta. Various points in the technique of retrograde catheter and cannula angiography are stressed to avoid the known hazards and complications. Prompt recognition and treatment of these complications is urged.
