A Sociological Perspective on Nutrition Research Among the Elderly: Toward Conceptual Development

Abstract
Social factors influencing nutrition among the elderly have recently received increased attention. Yet, a review of existing literature identifies both conceptual and operational problems with the use of socioeconomic status, culture, lifestyle characteristics, and historical change. To maximize dietary intervention, efficient functioning of federally sponsored nutrition programs, and subsequent research, greater attention to the conceptual foundation of nutrition-related variables is warranted. Suggestions for redirection are offered.
