Abstract
At various times after the injection of DL-ethionine or CC14 into rats, the levels of adenine nucleotides, lactate and pyruvate in the liver and the activity of 6 serum enzymes were measured. The action of ethionine was studied on a colony of male and on a colony of female rats. After the injection of ethionine there is a marked decrease in the concentrations of the liver-adenine nucleotides, while some individual serum enzymes show only slight increases. CC14 causes both a marked decrease in the liver-adenine nucleotide concentrations and a marked increase in the activity of serum enzymes. Since, however, the decrease in energy rich phosphates does not occur until after the increase in serum enzymes, the former cannot be responsible for the release of the enzymes.
