NEWER PHYSIOLOGY OF ABSORPTION FROM THE INTESTINE

Abstract
The forces regulating passage of materials from intestine to blood and from blood to intestine are complex and difficult to investigate. The fat balance technique has not been equaled by the radioiodinated triolein method as a means of detecting steatorrhea of mild or moderate degree. When absorption of I131 triolein and of I131 oleic acid are compared, the distinction between an absorptive and a digestive defect may be possible. The use of Co60 vitamin B12 has helped elucidate the mechanism responsible for macrocytic anemia in certain abnormalities of the small bowel. A method is available allowing quantitation of rates of absorption of isotopic water and certain electrolytes under physiologic conditions.
