Abstract
Based on the general assumption that body image boundaries are a defensive function of the ego, it was hypothesized that the effect of body image boundaries on ego development may be unique to each stage of development, particularly in adolescence. They may also be related to different kinds of ego weakness. Three groups of different ages answered a questionnaire composed of 34 items devised to assess ego-strength. Rorschach test was also administered individually. Each group was divided into 2 based on the Rorschach barrier and penetration scores. The data of ego strength scales were analyzed into 6 factors, and the means of each factor score were compared between the high and low groups in terms of the barrier and penetration score for each developmental stage. Barrier scores related to physical stability in early adolscence. Penetration scores related to self-confidence in late adolescence, and with seclusiveness throughout adolescence.
