Abstract
The nomenclature of the different karyotypes of the shrews belonging to the genus Sorex and related to the S. araneus group, which is characterized by a sex trivalent, is discussed, and the taxonomic status of the type A is evaluated. Cytological and morphological examination of 3 individuals trapped in the type-locality of S. coronatus indicate that chromosome species A is S. coronatus; S. gemellus Ott, 1968 is therefore a synonym. The species is described and the status of the subspecies known from this distribution range [S. c. euronotus, S. c. santonus, S. c. fretalis, S. a. tetragonurus and S. a. pyrenaicus] are examined.
