Meningitis Due to Escherichia coli

Abstract
Refractory meningitis due to Escherichia coli occurred in a young adult with a fracture of the temporal bone. Intramuscular administration of gentamicin resulted in detectable concentrations of this drug in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and temporary control of infection. For permanent bacteriologic cure, intramuscular and intrathecal therapy with gentamicin was ultimately required. The subcutaneous CSF reservoir of Ommaya provided a safe, convenient way to administer intrathecal therapy and to monitor its progress.
