Role of Urease in the Gastric Mucosa

Abstract
The effects of urease activity in isolated bull frog gastric mucosae have been investigated with the aid of N15 and C13 -labeled urea. It was found under the conditions of these expts. that (1) 48 to 80% of the ammonium ion found in the acid secretion was derived from urea; (2) of the total CO2 produced by the mucosae, 0.7 to 12% was derived from urea; (3) the ammonia and CO2 migrated predominatley in opposite directions; most of the ammonia appeared in the mucosal soln., and the greater proportion of the CO2 appeared in the submucosal soln.
