Secretory Otitis Media in Allergic Infants and Children

Abstract
Findings in this clinical survey would indicate that chronic secretory otitis media is a most frequent occurrence in atopic in-dividuals. A review of the literature as well as observations indicate that this is a disease in which no single cause can consistently be implicated and the likelihood is that it is a disease process of multiple causes. Data in this report shows that no single method of treatment is totally effective, and that best results are obtained only when one identifies, treats or removes specific etiologic factors. This survey emphasizes that allergic mechanisms are frequently overlooked factors, and that allergy may be a predisposing, if not the causative factor in chronic cases, especially in children with atopic characteristics in which non-allergic therapeutic measures have failed.
