Abstract
Observations in 8 spp. of Sciara not previously studied were made of limited chromosomes, somatic complements, and salivary gland chromosomes. The somatic complements consisted of 4 pairs with variation from 2 V-shaped pairs and 2 rods to 4 rods. Limited chromosomes were lacking in 1 sp., present as rods instead of the usual V''s in 3 others. Since 2 rod-shaped limited chromosomes were always present, the questions of their homology with the V-shaped type, and the genetic activity of both types were posed. Salivary gland studies revealed "repeats," 2 of which were double, and also showed gross structural changes. In addition, 5 types of small aberrations were found consisting of 1) single band deficiencies, 2) vesicular band apposed to disc-shaped bands, 3) thick band apposed to thin, 4) homogeneous region apposed to banded, and 5) terminal band deficiencies. These small aberrations are presumed to be characteristic of the genus. The need for taxonomic revision of the genus is mentioned.
