Surface effects on valence in rare-earth intermetallic compounds

Abstract
It is shown that the electronic properties of the surface of rare-earth intermetallic compounds may differ from those of the bulk whenever the level lies close to the Fermi energy. A surface valence transition is identified in Yb.
