Abstract
A method for the preparation of a medium from vegetable meal, (cotton-seed, peanut, soybean, alone or in combination) papain and Na2S is described. Autodigest also prepd. without added enzymes. This is an economical method, eliminating meat and peptone. Sprouted seeds and beans are superior to ungerminated plant material for certain purposes. The medium supports growth of streptococci, pneumococci, gonnococci and other organisms without added growth factors. It is superior to acid and pancreatic digests since it may be used for toxin production, as base for fluid thioglycollate media and for water and milk counts. These latter are usually higher than those obtained with standard agar.
