Serum and tissue levels of cefoxitin in perioperative prophylaxis

Abstract
In 31 patients, the antibiotic concentrations in serum, muscle and fat at various times after intravenous bolus injections of 2 g cefoxitin were determined by an agar diffusion method. The serum levels were described by a two-compartment open model, and the tissue levels were described by a one-compartment model. The attainable concentrations were compared with the inhibitory action on various pathogenic organisms, and suggestions are given as to the dosage in perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis.
