Abstract
A theory of the shift is developed of -state ions with an outer-shell configuration at octahedral and tetrahedral sites in crystals. A partial electron transfer through spin-orbit interaction from ligand ions to the -state ion is assumed to be a dominant source for the shift. A superhyperfine interaction is also calculated in terms of molecular-orbital parameters which are used in the shift. Some experiments are suggested to confirm that the partial electron transfer is a dominant source for the shift.
