Inoculation of API-20E from positive blood cultures

Abstract

The API-20E system (Analytab Products, Incorporated, Plainview, New York [USA] was inoculated from 4-6 h tryptic soy broth cultures that were inoculated from positive blood cultures containing gram-negative bacilli. This method gave the same genus and species identification for 139 of 140 organisms [Alcaligenes, Citrobacter spp., C. freundii, C. diversus, Enterobacter cloacae, E. aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, P. morganii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, S. enteritidis, Serratia marcescens.] (47 patient and 93 simulated positive cultures) when compared to the API recommended method of inoculation.
