Abstract
THE knee (Fig. 1) is the most frequently injured joint in many sports, and knee injuries are the leading cause of long-term disability from athletics. The absolute number of knee injuries in many sports has increased because of the increased number of participants. The relative number of knee injuries appears to be increasing in at least one major sport (skiing). Fortunately, advances have been made in understanding the mechanisms of injury and biomechanics, and in the diagnosis and treatment (including bracing and rehabilitation) of the knee.
