The use of an automatic syringe pipette to introduce periodically a predetermined volume of O2 into the animal chamber of a volumetric respirometer eliminates the usual need for measuring gas volumes and makes the described apparatus very rapid and convenient to use. Details for sizes suitable for mice and rats are given, but the general design may be adapted for larger or smaller animals with slight modification. Construction is from common laboratory materials and stock components which are readily obtainable.
