Entomology: The Naming of Geographically Variant Populations

Abstract

Subspecific treatments of insects vary from group to group. Population analysis below species is too complex to be bound by formal taxonomic or nomenclatorial rules and each case must be treated by whatever method seems best suited. Examples of geographic variation in Orthoptera are given. In general, infraspecific variation is best treated by description, graphic presentation and nontechnical names, not by latinized names subject to nomenclatorial rules.
