The allometry equation, which has been used widely to describe the shape changes which living organisms undergo when they increase in size, can be extended to the multivariate case by using the first principal component of the logarithmic covariance matrix. The hypotheses of isometry and of positive or negative allometry can be formulated either for one dimension with respect to another one or for each dimension with respect to the first principal component.
