THE TREATMENT OF ADDISON'S DISEASE WITH ADRENAL CORTEX EXTRACT1

Abstract

Observations with an adrenal cortex extract in treatment of Addison''s disease showed that from 10-20 cc. daily maintained life, but larger doses were necessary for optimum conditions. In a crisis, treatment should begin at once. 10 cc. active adrenal cortex extract and 170 cc. of 5% dextrose in normal salt soln. should be given per hr. until vomiting stops and appetite returns. Following a crisis, the patient must be maintained by adm. of extract in adequate doses (at least 10 cc. daily); by 12 gm. NaCl and 4 gm. Na citrate or bicarbonate daily by mouth; by diet high in calories and low in K. Extract dosage should be increased during an infection.
