The Perfect Stage of an Antibiotic-Producing Cephalosporium

Abstract

The per-fect stage of Cephalosporium salmosynnematum Roberts, source of the antibiotic synnematin, was obtained in cornmeal and oatmeal agar cultures, and the organism was demonstrated to be homothallic. The fungus is described as a new member of the genus Emericellopsis van Beyma, E. salmosynnemata, in the family Aspergillaceae (Eurotiaceae), being distinguished from other members of the genus especially by the dimensions and morphology of its ascospores. The 6 other known taxa in the genus Emericellopsis have some capacity to produce an antibiotic inhibitory to Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, and S. gallinarum.
