The epidemic of influenza in 1949 in the great towns of England and Wales has prompted a review of the death rates from influenza since 1837. The trend of the mortality curve has been generally downward, and 1948 witnessed the lowest number of deaths from influenza since 1889. This lowered mortality is not wholly due to chemotherapy since the trend developed before its introduction.
