After studying the type specimens involved, the red band fungus on Pinus spp. in eastern and western U. S., England, and central East Africa is identified as Dothistroma pini Hulbary. Actinothyrium marginatum Sacc. is a nomen confusum based on the fruiting body of Leptostroma decipiens Petr. and the spores of D. pini Hulbary. Material from western U. S. on P. ponderosa and P. contorta is referred to D. pini var. linearis.
