To the Editor: The silent period that follows exposure to HIV type 1 (HIV-1) and precedes seroconversion remains a problem in the screening of the blood supply.1 Besides the virion structural proteins gag, pol, and env, the HIV-1 provirus also codes for nonstructural proteins that have a regulatory role in the synthesis of infectious virions.
