Abstract
The directional frictional effect of the wool fibre is discussed in terms of the geometry of an ideal scale profile, assuming that the real areas of contact are formed by elastic deformation of the scale material. The predicted variation of frictional force with load, regain, fibre diameter, scale distribution, and roughness of the rubbing surface is examined and found to agree well with published experimental data. A new explanation is suggested for the absence of D.F.E. in dry chlorinated fibres.
