Selective Habituation of Vestibular Nystagmus by Visual Stimulation

Abstract
The effect on vestibular nystagmus of repeated exposure to a unidirectional rotating visual field was studied in ten subjects. A visually induced sensation of self-rotation (circularvection - CV) about a vertical axis was repeated 30 times for each subject. Post-stimulation rotation with eyes closed showed a significant 40 % reduction in vestibular nystagmus intensity in the direction of the CV, measured by cumulative displacement, and no significant reduction in the opposite direction.
