Abstract
The oxidation of iron by iodine in acetonitrile and tetrahydrofuran solution leads to specific redox equilibria. In dependence of the molar ratios of Fe and I2 the following compounds are isolated: Fe(CH3CN)6Fel4, Fe(CH3CN)6(I3)2, Fe(C4H8O)6[FeI3(C4H8O)]2. When Et4NI is added to a tetrahydrofuran solution of FeI2 and I2, Et4NFeI4 can be obtained Evidence is presented for the stability of Et4NFeI4 to autoreduction. A resonance Raman spectrum has been obtained for Et4NFeI4. Crystal data for the different compounds are reported.
