THE GAS EXCHANGE OF ISOLATED MUSCLES DURING STIMULATION AND RECOVERY

Abstract
The gas exchange was measured volumetrically in a micro-respirometer. The muscle (frog) is stimulated inside the apparatus for 5-10 sec. and the excess O consumed in recovery is measured. The results show an apparent R. Q. of 0.92 for the resting metabolism, and 0.93 for the excess metabolism. After stimulation the excess O was consumed relatively more rapidly than the corresponding CO2 was excreted. This phenom- enon is explained by the greater diffusivity of the 0.
