Electron transfer bands of the divalent 3d transition series ions in LiCl

Abstract
The electron transfer absorption bands of the divalent transition metal ions V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu in LiCl host crystals have been measured up to the absorption edge of LiCl at 1500 Å. The band assignments and average energies of electron transfer are given. The average energies can be fitted to empirical equations containing I2, the second ionization potential; for example, ?=CI2, where C=22.4±0.5 eV. By comparing the values of C for several host chlorides, it is shown that C depends on the properties of the MCl6−4 cluster much more than on the host crystal. The relationship of the electron transfer energy to the photoionization energy and to the band levels of LiCl are discussed.
