Enzyme systems in marine algae. 3. Trans-β-glucosylation by extracts of Cladophora rupestris and Ulva lactuca

Abstract
Extracts of C. rupestris and U. lactuca catalyse the synthesis of oligosaccharides from concentrated solutions of cellobiose. Lamina-ribiose, gentiobiose and cellotriose have been identified by paper chromatography. On incubation of C. rupestris extract with cellobiose-pentose mixtures, glucosylpentose di-saccharides are produced. 3-0-[beta]-D-Glucopyranosyl-D-xylopyranose has been isolated from a cellobiose-xylose mixture and characterized. The acceptor specificity of cellobioses from various biological sources is discussed.
