Magnetic properties of some new Co–Nb–B metallic glasses

Abstract
Several new amorphous metallic alloys based on cobalt or iron and stabilized with up to 10 at.% boron and up to 14 at.% niobium have been melt spun to ribbon form. Notable are Co80Nb14B6, Co84Nb10B6, and Fe81Nb5B14. The cobalt moment and Curie temperature reductions due to niobium are stronger than those due to boron. These new glasses show attractive soft ferromagnetic properties—similar to those of the familiar transition metal/metalloid glasses—while offering improved thermal stability despite the reduced metalloid content.
