Abstract
The reversal behaviour of thin films of Ni-Fe-Co under the application of the inhomogeneous field from a strip conductor is studied. A theory of reversal is presented which takes into account the demagnetizing fields of the reversing area. Comparison with the experimental results shows qualitative but not quantitative agreement. A modification to the theory is discussed, but agreement with experiment is not obtained. The conclusion is reached that the microscopic detail of the magnetization distribution is responsible for the observed behaviour.
