Abstract
After admn. of thyrotropin to guinea pigs a generalized fat mobilization occurs with fat deposition in liver, muscles and kidneys within 24 hrs. Retrobulbar fat was not increased. An increased amt. of mucopolysaccharides hydrolyzable by hyaluronidase occurred in the retro-orbital tissue where the fat was practically replaced by a metachromatic-staining material soluble after short exposure to hyaluronidase. Control prepns. untreated with thyrotropin showed only negligible traces of metachromatic staining material. Thyroidectomy failed to protect against the exophthalmogenic effect of thyrotropin; it seemed, rather, to potentiate this effect.
