(π, d) reaction for small incident pion energies

Abstract

We suggest that the reaction $\pi +A\to d+B$ provides a useful probe of nuclear structure. A model in which the pion is absorbed on a single nucleon is used to calculate the cross sections in a plane wave approximation. Results are presented for ${}_{}{}^{18}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{O}$ and ${}_{}{}^{118}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Sn}$ targets. The high momentum transfer nature of this reaction leads to considerable sensitivity to the dineutron wave function on which the pion is absorbed.
