Abstract
The incentive for preparing this paper was given by observations made during and after the construction of a cellular cofferdam which constitutes the side-walls and the middle wall of a shipway. A digest of these and various other observations on cellular cofferdams indicated that the theories on which the design of these cofferdams is usually based give the designer an inadequate conception of the factors that determine the stability of cofferdams. Keywords
