Abstract
The inhibition of plastic deformation by dislocation locking promotes brittleness. The influence of manganese in iron is studied in detail and it is concluded that the ductility conferred by the manganese is associated with weakened dislocation locking as well as with grain refinement. The weakening of the locking appears to be due to interaction between nitrogen and manganese atoms. Keywords
