Abstract
In dogs given triiodothyronine (T-3) and also infused with sodium phosphate, the following changes were noted: tachycardia, tachypnea, hyperthermia, increased O2 consumption, a decrease in plasma magnesium and respiratory alkalosis. In addition, a marked elevation in plasma osmotic pressure was measured which was not accounted for by the changes in electrolyte concentration of the plasma. These changes were not observed with either T-3 or phosphate when given alone. Effects of T-3 and phosphate when given together were noted within 60-120 minutes of the T-3 administration, and death usually occurred within 180 minutes. It is suggested that the enhancing effect of phosphate on T-3 might profitably be considered in patients with an elevated phosphate given thyroid hormones. Keywords
