Domestic-scale fuel cells of a few kilowatts potentially offer a very attractive package - cheap power and heat entirely under one's own control. They also raise the possibility of massive structural changes in electricity supply, from a few large, centralised power plants to a multitude of small, distributed generators. This not only has profound technical, economic and regulatory significance; it also requires some careful consideration of the pitfalls that may lie ahead.
